Welcome to Las Vegas Nevada

Spanish explorers first discovered the valley in 1829 and named the site Las Vegas (which in Spanish means “The Meadows”).
At the time Las Vegas was little more than a watering hole for travelers in route to California.

Artesian springs prompted Mormons to be the first to create a settlement in 1855 which was abandoned in 1857.

Las Vegas separated from the Arizona Territory and joined with Nevada in 1867.

In 1905 with the arrival of the railroad the town of Las Vegas was established and started to grow. The Nevada legislature legalized gambling in an effort to lift the state from the Great Depression and stimulate the economy, and Las Vegas has been growing steadily since.

While tourism and the convention industry are still the city’s major sources of income, manufacturing, warehousing, the motion picture industry and trucking are major sources of employment.

High-tech companies are also located and are relocating in Las Vegas. Low unemployment, no state income taxes, beautiful weather and a very diverse economy can be attributed to Las Vegas receiving between 6,000 and 8,000 new residents each month.
